What Window Brand Should I Go With?

It's the most common question we get, and it's the third one to ask — not because it's a bad question, but because brand is the last decision you make, not the first.

Ask five dealers which brand to buy and you'll get five different answers, each one the line that dealer carries. That's not a trick; it's that the question has no answer in the abstract. A brand only means something relative to a material, and a material only means something relative to a style.

So the order runs: style → material → brand. Get the first two settled and the third becomes a straightforward comparison. Skip them and you're comparing on something that isn't relevant yet at the deciding stage.

Start with the architecture, not the window

The style of the house narrows the material list faster than anything else, because certain materials can produce certain profiles and others can't.

Spanish Colonial Revival and Mediterranean. These elevations were originally glazed in wrought iron — slender, dark, divided into small lites. Steel is the modern equivalent, which is why it dominates specification on the South Coast. Solid wood and clad wood in dark finishes also work. Wide-framed anything reads wrong immediately.

Traditional, Colonial, Craftsman, farmhouse. Wood or aluminum-clad wood. These styles depend on profile detail — putty lines, ogee stops, real muntin geometry — and wood machines into those shapes in a way extruded metal doesn't.

Modern and contemporary. Thermal aluminum or minimal-frame systems. The design intent is usually maximum glass and minimum frame, and aluminum delivers that at a fraction of steel's cost. Steel still earns its place where the frame is meant to read as a graphic line.

Transitional. The broadest field, and where most decisions come down to interior finish preference rather than exterior constraint.

If your project is going through a design-review board — Santa Barbara, Montecito, or any historic district — this step isn't optional. The board will have opinions about material and profile before it has opinions about brand.

The materials

Steel. The strongest option, and the reason that matters is deflection: steel is roughly three times as stiff as aluminum, so it carries a large area of glass on a narrow section without sagging. Frames last a century or more. It's also the most expensive material, carries the longest lead times, conducts heat readily — a thermally broken system isn't optional on a conditioned envelope in California — and coastal exposure makes finish specification a real conversation. Thermal aluminum. Narrow sightlines at a fraction of steel's cost, excellent dimensional stability, very large sizes, and a wide range of anodized and powder-coat finishes. It conducts more heat than wood, so the thermal break does the work of meeting Title 24. Profile choice matters — specified poorly it can read commercial rather than residential.

Aluminum-clad wood. A wood core with an aluminum shell on every weather-facing surface. Wood warmth and paintability inside, an exterior that never needs repainting. Sightlines are heavier than steel or aluminum, and the cladding has to be continuous — any gap in the shell defeats the system. The most versatile choice across traditional and transitional work.

Solid wood. The most authentic profiles, the best insulator of the frame materials, and the only option that can be shaped or restored to match historic units. In exchange you accept an exterior maintenance cycle — repaint or refinish on a schedule the rest of the house doesn't need, and sooner on west and south elevations.

Vinyl. The most attractive price point of any material, by a wide margin. The tradeoffs are in appearance and range: it can't hold a narrow sightline, color options are more limited and less stable under direct sun, and it won't produce historically correct profiles. For a great many homes that's a sensible set of tradeoffs, which is why vinyl is the most-installed window material in the country.

Composite. If price is driving the decision but vinyl doesn't get you where you want to be on appearance or durability, ask us about the Kolbe Forgent Series. Now — and only now — compare brands

Once material and style are settled, you're usually choosing among two or three manufacturers who all make a credible version of what you need. This is where comparing apples to apples matters, because two quotes can both say “aluminum-clad wood casement” and describe meaningfully different windows.

There are a lot of details that move the price, and nearly all of them trace back to how the unit has to fit your house. These are examples, not a complete list:

Jamb depth. Has to match your wall assembly — 2×4 versus 2×6, plus sheathing and any furring. A window quoted at the wrong jamb depth needs extension jambs, which costs money and changes how the opening reads from inside.

Nail fin versus block frame. The installation method, which determines the flashing detail. Fin material — and whether there's a fin at all — changes what's possible in stucco or masonry, and whether the unit suits new construction or retrofit.

The glazing package. “Insulated glass” describes almost nothing on its own. Dual or triple pane? Which Low-E coating, and on which surface? Argon filled? Warm-edge spacer or aluminum? Laminated glass is its own decision — an interlayer between two lites that adds impact protection and meaningful sound attenuation, valuable on a street-facing elevation or under a flight path. Each of these moves both the U-factor and the price.

Tempered and safety glazing. Code requires it near doors, floors, tubs, and stairs. Some quotes build it in; others list it as an adder. On a house with a lot of qualifying openings that's a real swing.

U-factor and SHGC. These have to match your Title 24 compliance run. A cheaper window that fails the run isn't cheaper — you pay it back in insulation, HVAC, or reduced glass area.

Divided lite type. True divided lite, simulated divided lite with an internal spacer bar, or grilles between the glass. Three different appearances at three different prices. Design-review boards frequently rule out the third.

Hardware. Multipoint versus single-point locking, finish range, handle design. On a door you touch every day, this isn't a small detail.

Performance ratings. Air, water, and structural ratings under AAMA/NAFS, plus the DP rating. On coastal or ridge sites these separate products that otherwise look identical.

Warranty. Length, what's actually covered — glass seal, finish, and hardware are often warranted differently — and whether it transfers when the house sells.

Lead time. The difference between 8 weeks and 26 weeks is a framing schedule, a loan draw, and sometimes a completion date.

Putting it in order

Anyone who answers “what brand should I go with?” without asking about your architecture, your wall assembly, and your compliance run is pointing you at what's on their shelf.

The sequence is: settle the style, choose the material that serves it, then compare two or three manufacturers line by line on the details above. By that point the brand question usually answers itself — and when two lines are genuinely close, the tiebreaker tends to be lead time and warranty rather than the badge.
